ऋषभ or Ṛṣabha is listed as the eighth avatāra of विष्णु (Viṣṇu) of twenty-two in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.3.13, but it should be noted also that शिव (Śiva) has a ninth avatāra (of twenty-eight in Liṅga Purāṇa 1.24.43, also mentioned in the Śiva Purāṇa) named Ṛṣabha.[1] There is likely distinction between the two identities. The first तीर्थंकर (tīrthaṅkara) of Jainism is identified as well by the name Ṛṣabha.[2] and appears to be the same as the Vaiṣṇava avatāra, given the family description (inclusion within the Ikṣvāku dynasty, and fathered by King Nabhi).
